For the use of a patient-specific instrument, a manufacturing method and a method of use for use in ball-socket joint surgery. The device includes an attachment mechanism for attaching the instrument to the joint fossa of the patient, the attachment mechanism having at least a first part and a second part that can engage the edge of the articular fossa of the patient. Each of the members being shaped to match the shape of the corresponding portion of the edge of the joint pocket or to conform to the shape of the corresponding portion of the edge of the joint pocket. The body has at least one guide structure for guiding the components to be used in the arthroplasty operation. The device includes a locking mechanism through which the body and attachment mechanism can be assembled into a patient-specific instrument in a unique configuration. The patient-specific device may be attached to the patient & apos; s joint fossa only at a single pre-planned location.
